Carl van Vechten, nacido en 1880 en Cedar Rapids, Iowa, tras una breve temporada en Chicago donde se había enamorado de la cultura afroamericana se trasladó a Nueva York en 1906 , y especialmente la música ragtime. En 1909 se convirtió en el primer crítico de danza moderna estadounidense para el New York Times.
